“A Study of How People with Mental Illness Perceive and Interact with the Police”
This is the only Canadian study to explore the perspectives and lived experiences of people with severe mental illness in relation to their involvement with police. A community-based research approach was used in the study to encourage community engagement, active participation, and collaboration of people who live with a mental illness. The research team included people who have lived experience with mental illness, the research materials were developed in consultation with people who have mental illness, and the data collection process was led and performed by peer researchers. These, along with other findings and recommendations within the report, have been provided to the Mental Health Commission of Canada with the goal of improving training and education of police officers. The report is co-authored by CREST.BD member Jamie Livingston, with contributions from Victoria Maxwell, Sara Lapsley and Erin Michalak.
