Community Engagement Days

2011 – Touched with Fire or Burnt Out? Igniting a Dialogue

On April 1st, 2011 CREST.BD invited creative people (musicians, artists, writers, performers, designers, etc.) who live with BD to our 4th annual Community Consultation Day on UBC campus. The day began with a series of focus groups designed to explore the factors which encourage or challenge the expression of creativity. A series of short presentations on current research in the area of creativity and BD were given by team members. The event closed with a group brainstorming session, a group dialogue which was captured by a graphic artist.  Community members were invited to display their artwork, which became a central focus of our networking lunch.

A proceedings report with highlights from the focus groups will be published in early 2012.
Presentations and photos from the event will soon be available.

2010 – ‘Through My Eyes’: The Concept of Recovery in People with Bipolar Disorder

On June 29th 2010, CREST.BD held its third annual CCD which explored the topic of recovery and its meaning to people with BD, their family members and supports. The community based research event featured focus group interviews, presentations from team members and a larger group discussion on next steps in the field of mental health recovery.

‘Through my eyes’: 2010 Community Consultation Day Preceedings Report
The Community Consultation Day Preceedings Report provides an overview of the 2010 research event including, research methods,  thematic focus group questions and a discussion on the qualitative findings from the day. The data provide a unique look at the emerging perspectives on recovery from people with lived experience of BD, their family members and healthcare providers. The report also highlights the work and expertise of the team members who facilitated the event and provides an overview of their recovery-oriented presentations from the day. This proceedings report represents a departure point for a diverse set of outputs from the recovery research findings which will be geared toward both community members and their support networks. Future activities based on this research are outlined in the “Next Steps” of this publication.
