Self-Management Strategies Used by ‘High Functioning’ Individuals with Bipolar Disorder: From Research to Clinical Practice

In this study, CREST.BD members interviewed a Canadian sample of 32 high functioning people living with bipolar disorder to explore the self-management strategies that these people used to stay well or regain their wellness. The findings offer hope to practitioners and their clients because it indicates that positive well-being strategies can be effective, even for people who have experienced more severe forms of bipolar disorder.

On June 29th, 2010 CREST.BD held its 3rd annual Community Consultation Day, “Through my eyes: The concept of recovery in people with bipolar disorder” which focused upon expanding our understanding of what recovery means to people living with BD and their family members. This first publication from CREST.BD’s Wellness Study focuses on the self-management strategies described by people who are living well with their BD. The researchers in this study interviewed 32 people who lived with bipolar disorder. The aim was to generate narratives that could shed further light on the specific ways that this sample was able to achieve and maintain wellness.
