Sagar V. Parikh, MD, FRCPC

Sagar Parikh Dr. Parikh is Deputy Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the University Health Network (Toronto Western, Toronto General, and Princess Margaret hospitals) and director of Continuing Mental Health Education at the University of  Toronto, where he also is  Professor of Psychiatry.  He previously served as Deputy Clinical Director of Mood and Anxiety Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (formerly the Clarke Institute), where he headed the Bipolar Clinic from 1994-2002.   Before becoming a psychiatrist, he worked as a family physician in northern Manitoba and southern Ontario.

Dr. Parikh is the author / editor of two books and over 100 peer reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as the CANMAT Pocket Guide to Depression. Research interests include clinical treatments in mood disorders, health services research, genetics, epidemiology, and educational research.  Current major studies include a Knowledge Translation grant in Bipolar Disorder, a clinical trial for Bipolar Depression, and a study of Workplace Depression, all funded by CIHR, as well as a clinical trial examining the utility of Telephone-Delivered Psychotherapy as an adjunct to medication for Depression. His research on bipolar disorder led to the R.O.Jones Award (2nd place) from the Canadian Psychiatric Association in 2011.  He was awarded the Dave Davis CEPD Research Award from the University of Toronto in 2008. He also is a co-author of CANMAT treatment guidelines for Depression and for Bipolar Disorder,  Secretary of the International Society for Affective Disorders, and Head, Section of Affective Disorders, World Psychiatric Association.  As medical director of Mensante, he helped create a novel internet system for recognition and management of mental disorders. He was honored by the Canadian Psychiatric Association by delivering the Distinguished Member Lecture at the 2007 CPA Annual Meeting.  His teaching has won him three local, two national, and one international awards, most recently the Association of Chairs of Psychiatry Award for Excellence in Education in 2005.
