PhD Candidate, Department of Psychiatry, The University of Melbourne, Australia
Georgia is a senior PhD Candidate in the Mood Psychosis Spectrum Group, in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Melbourne. Supervised by Associate Professor Tamsyn Van Rheenen, her doctoral research is centred on understanding cognition in bipolar disorder, with a particular interest in how biological, psychological and social factors may converge to impact thinking skills.
In addition to her studies, Georgia is a research coordinator for several bipolar disorder projects and is very passionate about engaging lived experience expertise in mental health research. She has also worked in disability support and undergraduate teaching, helping to develop her strong interest in making science more accessible to all.
Throughout her PhD, Georgia has held executive leadership roles for the national Australian organisations Biological Psychiatry Australia Early Careers Network and the Students of Brain Research, and has contributed to the writing of graduate research policy for the University of Melbourne. She is an avid science communicator, having presented at annual Pint of Science festivals, on Melbourne radio shows, and in the CREST.BD World Bipolar Day ‘Ask Me Anything’ events.
Georgia hopes to continue this work beyond her PhD, guided by a goal to continue demystifying mental health research and bridge the gap between academic and consumer worlds.
