Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Long-Term Care: The Tapestry Tool Project by the BC SUPPORT Unit

Every resident, staff, and visitor to long-term care homes deserves to feel welcome, included and celebrated. But what systems are currently in place to make sure long-term care homes are welcoming spaces for all individuals? With a lack of resources, best practices and examples, it can be difficult for homes to know which changes to make.

To help support care homes in being more inclusive to residents from all walks of life?, the BC SUPPORT Unit is excited to announce the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Long-Term Care Project! This project is presented on the Tapestry Tool platform – an interactive, self-directed learning platform designed at the University of British Columbia by Dr. Steven Barnes.

One of the homes featured in this project is Little Mountain Place, a long-term care home in Vancouver, BC. The main focus at this particular home was to become more inclusive of 2SLGBTQ+ residents, staff and visitors.

Watch the video featuring Little Mountain Place to hear the perspective of Sandra, senior manager of the home, on the trials and successes of inclusivity in long-term care, and resident, Bruce, about their experience as the only open non-binary resident of Little Mountain Place.

In addition to highlighting Little Mountain Place’s journey towards inclusivity, this Tapestry is a learning tool for any long-term care homes looking for support in their journey – click the link below to access webinars, literature, and resident perspectives on creating welcoming spaces for diverse faiths and 2SLGBTQ+ communities.
